A 75-year Miami barbecue landmark has a closing date.
On Nov. 3, Shorty's BBQ said its iconic US 1 Dadeland location will close after Sunday, Dec. 27, 2026. The restaurant asks guests to visit once more and share memories at bayley@shortys.com.
What stays open
Miami New Times and What Now both report that the West Miami and Davie locations remain open. Shorty's also says its catering team still covers Miami-Dade and Broward. The South Miami / Dadeland menu page still lists the 9200 S. Dixie Highway dining room and phone line while the clock runs down.
How we got here
Shorty's traces the Dadeland location to 1951 and founder E.L. "Shorty" Allen. New Times notes the original building burned in 1972 and was rebuilt on the same site. What Now and Spanish-language coverage of the announcement also point back to a late-2021 land sale to Ocean Dadeland LLC that included a lease so the restaurant could keep serving while plans moved ahead.
Shorty's own post does not name a replacement restaurant or a demolition date. It focuses on thanking guests and steering them to the remaining shops and catering.
If you go now, plan for the US 1 / South Dixie Highway traffic near Dadeland Mall and the Metrorail stations. The dining room has long been a picnic-table style stop for families, after-game crowds and regulars who grew up on the ribs and mustard-tinged sauce.
If you want one more meal
Mark Sunday, Dec. 27, 2026, as the last day at 9200 S. Dixie Highway, Miami. Hours and holiday schedules can change, so check Shorty's site before you go.
The company says the tradition continues at Bird Road in West Miami, in Davie and through catering for groups large and small. For a different kind of South Florida feast this month, see our South Florida Seafood Festival guide and Festival del Platano in Allapattah.
