Some of the biggest names in modern art just landed on Biscayne Bay.
The new show brings nearly 100 works from Berlin's Museum Berggruen, PAMM says. It's the largest showing of the collection on the East Coast and the first time PAMM has filled its biggest galleries entirely with modern art.
What you'll see
- Pablo Picasso's "La Lecture" (1953) and his Blue Period "Portrait de Jaume Sabartés" (1904).
- Paul Klee's "Landschaft in Blau" (1917).
- Henri Matisse's paper cut-out "Éléments végétaux" (1947) and his painting "Intérieur d'Atelier à Nice" (1929).
- Paul Cézanne's "Portrait de Madame Cézanne," plus sculptures by Alberto Giacometti and works by Georges Braque.
The rooms are grouped by theme, including still lifes, portraits, interiors and landscapes. Works from PAMM's own collection by Latin American modern artists Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García and Wifredo Lam hang alongside them. Natalie Zimmer and Maritza M. Lacayo curated the Miami showing, according to the exhibition page.
The collector behind it
Heinz Berggruen was born in Berlin and left Nazi Germany for the United States in 1936. He later ran a gallery in Paris and became friends with Picasso. Germany bought his collection in 2000. While the Berlin museum is closed for renovation, highlights have been touring, drawing more than 1.5 million visitors so far, PAMM says.
Plan your visit
Tickets are limited by capacity, so PAMM recommends buying online ahead of time on its visit page. Free admission also covers active military and veterans, health care workers, first responders and Florida educators. Miami New Times has more on the show's highlights.
Thursday nights are the best deal: the museum stays open until 9 p.m. and entry is free after 5 p.m. Verde, the museum's restaurant, is on site.
The museum sits in Museum Park, between the Kaseya Center and the Arsht Center. The Metromover's Museum Park station is right outside. Our Metromover guide explains how to ride for free from Brickell and Downtown.
Also at PAMM: Cecilia Vicuña's "Quipu Gut" closes Sunday, Nov. 1. And if you want more art in Miami this fall, Art Basel Miami Beach is coming in December with a smaller floor plan.
