Miami Beach’s free neighborhood ride service could get a longer runway—and larger vehicles. A proposal on the October 14 City Commission agenda would extend the Freebee agreement for three years and replace the existing Tesla Model X fleet with Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric vehicles.

The agenda describes the upgrade as complimentary, with other material terms unchanged. The extension would require a five-sevenths competitive-bidding waiver and authorization to negotiate and execute the agreement. These terms await commission consideration.

Commissioners Alex Fernandez and Joseph Magazine sponsor the item. Its September 10 version was not reached. The posted proposal gives no vehicle delivery date or seating count.

Today’s service is a free, shared, on-demand option for a defined Mid Beach and partial North Beach area. Door-to-door trips must start and end within the zone; it is not a citywide taxi replacement.

The current service runs Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Rides can be requested through the Ride Freebee app, by calling 855-918-3733 or by hailing a vehicle. The city suggests requesting roughly 20 minutes ahead, rather than treating that as a guaranteed wait time.

Its practical value is short trips and transit connections, including Indian Creek Drive at 41st and 63rd streets. The city calls it a continuous vanpool: routes can change as passengers join.

Freebee’s own service directory lists Miami Beach’s Mid Beach offering separately from its senior service. That distinction matters when choosing the service in the app. The operator says local partners determine service areas, hours and vehicle types, which is why a free ride program in one location should not be assumed to work the same way elsewhere.

The October 14 commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive, on the third floor. The city also offers viewing through its meeting channels. The exact time for the Freebee item will depend on the agenda’s progress.

The useful next update is the commission’s decision, followed by the final agreement and any confirmed fleet rollout. Until then, riders can use the current service while checking that their planned trip fits its existing area and hours.
