Miami has a daily American Airlines flight to Haiti again.

American Airlines launched daily nonstop service between Miami International Airport and Cap-Haitien on Sunday, Nov. 1. The airline says it is the first major U.S. network carrier to resume flights to Haiti.

The first flight, AA 2492, was flown by an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew led by Captain Oliver Jean. A send-off at the gate featured red and white balloons and konpa music, the Miami Herald reported.

Why it matters here

South Florida is home to the largest Haitian American community in the country, according to the county's airport announcement of the route in June. For many families, a trip home has meant charter flights, higher fares and last-minute schedule changes, the Herald reported.

Major U.S. airlines stopped flying to Port-au-Prince in November 2024 after gang gunfire hit planes over the capital. A Federal Aviation Administration ban on landings there remains in effect, according to the Herald.

Cap-Haitien's smaller airport was not covered by that ban. It has become Haiti's main international gateway as gang violence grips the capital, the Herald reported.

"Thanks to American, more of our residents and visitors can travel between Miami and Haiti again," Cassandra Arnold, deputy chief of staff to Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, said at the send-off.

Sunrise Airways also flies between Miami and Cap-Haitien, the Caribbean Journal reported. American's return gives travelers a second option on the route.

The flight

American flies the route once a day with Boeing 737 jets. The planes have a premium cabin and free high-speed Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T, according to the county's airport.

The schedule is built for connections. American says travelers can link to the flight from more than 90 U.S. cities through Miami. New York and Orlando, both home to large Haitian communities, were named as examples when the route was announced.

American first flew to Haiti in 1971. The Cap-Haitien return marks its 100th destination in the Caribbean and Latin America.

What else is new at MIA

The Haiti flight is part of a wider push at MIA, American's largest international hub. The airline runs more than 410 peak daily flights there to more than 170 destinations.

American has also restarted flights from Miami to Caracas, Venezuela, and added Maracaibo. It plans its first flights to Barcelona, Venezuela, on Jan. 15, 2027.

American also plans a rebuilt Concourse D with more gates, a new Flagship lounge and a bigger Admirals Club at gate D30. It says this winter will bring its largest Miami schedule ever.
